Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are complex carbohydrates, i.e. natural sugars in the form of starches, which are found in small quantities in various plants. Together with other starch-type oligosaccharides such as inulin, FOS are almost completely indigestible. They are highly appreciated among nutritional supplements for their "probiotic" effects, that is to say that they are the preferred nourishment for the various bacterial populations that make up the intestinal bacterial flora.
